Curruculum (Secondary)
Temple Secondary School builds upon the attention to detail that underscores the provision in Temple Early Years & Foundation Stage and Temple Primary.
The educational programme offered in Temple Secondary School is designed to provide a world-class curriculum that helps produce learners who are self-assured, accountable, creative and inspired. The students will receive carefully planned experiences that will provide them with many opportunities to develop academically, emotionally, spiritually and socially.
Temple Secondary School has embarked on the journey to become a specialist school for the Arts, the Sciences and Mathematics. With highly qualified specialist teachers and state of the art equipment, the Science and Mathematics Departments provide students with an enriched learning experience that involves using the interactive whiteboard and software that provides vivid imagery, bringing concepts to life in real time.
Subjects
Core Curriculum
English has a pre-eminent place in education and within the society. As a subject in its own right and the medium for teaching across the curriculum, with the exception of other languages, students in Cambridge Secondary 2 are expected to reach a high level of proficiency in both spoken and written English.
All pupils receive a daily Mathematics lesson of between 45-60 minutes. Mathematics is taught in a number of ways but much of the work is related to and supported by practical activities in order to develop a sound basic knowledge and understanding in calculation, measurement, shape and data handling, to ensure that children become numerate.
A great emphasis is put on differentiated learning and further developing mental math skills. We work to develop students’ confidence and enthusiasm and their ability to apply mathematical skills and knowledge to the world around them.
The Science curriculum is organised into topic modules. The modules are planned throughout the school to ensure balance and progression within the content of the Temple Curriculum. We encourage an enquiring mind, a deeper understanding of the world around us and aim to develop the students’ scientific skills through first-hand experiences. Lessons are presented in a practical, relevant context, with high quality resources in the Physics, Chemistry ad Biology laboratories. Students solve problems by making close observations, planning, predicting, fair testing and recording their findings in a systematic way. We work also to foster responsible attitudes towards the environment and all living things.
Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
This subject sharpens the conversational and written skills of the students in the language of French. The students learn to conjugate French verbs, they increase their French vocabulary while at the same time learning about French culture.
Electives
The study of Humanities aims to help the students have an awareness of time and place. Our activities widen from the local to national and worldwide localities. History covers both local and world units. Humanities are seen as practical ‘hands on’ subjects.
Art is for most students a natural form of expression and a source of great pleasure. We encourage students to develop their creative and imaginative talents through learning skills and techniques and using a variety of materials and tools. Pupils also learn to appreciate works of art and use artistic language to describe paintings, sculptures and other artefacts.
We provide our students with opportunities to work with a variety of materials such as wood, clay and textiles. They are helped to develop skills that enable them to plan, design and make, and evaluate.
We aim to develop agility, coordination and confidence through physical activity. All pupils have one hour of PE a week. Additional opportunities exist to further develop students’ interests and skills outside of formal school hours and at the weekend, with a good emphasis on swimming, soccer, tag rugby, basketball and volleyball.
Students experience music in a variety of ways. Each class has regular music lessons in which the skills needed to make music are taught. The theory of music is also taught alongside the practicals, with the aim of developing a deeper appreciation of the history and rudiments of music, as well as the masters in Music. We aim to enable students to choose instruments to play different effects when composing a piece of music, to be able to play in time to a piece of music and to enjoy singing and playing.
The curriculum in the secondary school is delivered in three consecutive programmes:
- Key Stage Three (ages 11 – 14+ years) and
- Key Stage Four (ages 14 – 16+ years)
- Post 16
This comprises a three-year programme that caters for students between the ages of 11 and 14. Beginning in Year 7, the programmes culminates in Year 9 with the external Cambridge International Checkpoint examination. Students take the Secondary progression tests in Years 7 and 8.
In Key Stage 3, the students receive a solid foundation for higher education. Necessary skills, knowledge and attitudes will be developed during this programme, with a view to empowering the students on their journey of self discovery as they begin to think about possible future paths for themselves.
At the end of Key Stage 3, the students are given the opportunity to choose subjects they will wish to pursue at a higher level in Key Stage 4. Before final choices are made, the students undergo a rigorous career counseling package that helps them dialogue with their teachers, their parents and professionals from a variety of fields when considering the choices available as well as possible future careers.
Students in Cambridge Secondary 2 will also have a core curriculum, and now have the element of choice from blocks of elective subjects.
All students in Cambridge Secondary 2 will study the following:
- English Language (First or Second Language).
- Science (Biology, Chemistry or Physics)
(from which students may select up to seven subjects)
- Fine Art
- Business Studies
- Economics
- Geography
- History
- Information Communication Technology
- Physical Education
Non-Examined Curriculum:
All students in Cambridge Secondary 2 will follow non-examined courses in Physical Education and Personal Social Health and Economics Education.
Following a rigorous programme, students sit for the International General Certificate in Secondary Education.

Post 16:
This is an intensive one year programme that prepares students for the regional West African Secondary School Certificate in Education. Subjects available in Year 12 are:
